France To Allow Online Games Of Skill

Via the Online Casino Advisory, news that France – in its move to regulate Internet gambling – is allowing online games of skill (including include poker, sports wagering, and horse racing), but games of luck (gambling games) are not going to be allowed.  While SynWorlds is not actively engaged in the debate over online gambling, we do feel that the increasing popularity of skill based gaming is going to cause some regulatory challenges going forward.  As the article notes:

“…Online gambling is shaping up as a particularly contentious issue in Europe as countries work to protect their national gambling monopolies. It makes sense. Gambling is, historically, a state-level monopoly either directly administered by the government or under very restrictive licensing. The Internet (for gambling) is a true and direct challenge to sovereignty.”
