Wii are the World… An Advent of Communications Games?

Two interesting articles by the Virtual Worlds News and Next-Gen.biz about recent rumors suggesting that Nintendo’s next version of Wii’s Animal Crossing game will have massively multiplayer functionality and be set as a social networking MMO.  As VWN states, such a development will be a continuation of a trend with this particular game:

“…Previous versions allowed users to trade items over memory cards or the DS’ wireless connection, already giving it multiplayer element.

Next-gen.biz is a bit more certain that this is the direction the game will take, explaining that:

“…Nintendo already refers to the sequel as a “‘communications game’ rather than a videogame, and playing already depends on real-world timekeeping, weather patterns, social conventions, and above all else economic interactions.”

We (Wii?) don’t normally comment on rumors until we see innovations in the market but, given the astounding success of Wii and Nintendo’s recent innovative leadership in the console sector, we will be watching this possible strategic shift closely.
